A polished and inscribed redish marble stone with wrought iron metal scultpure in the shape of a wing.

The memorial remembers the crew of B-24 (42-52025) 'Arsenic and Lace' of the 765th Bomber Squadron, 461st Bomber Group that was shot down near here on December 17, 1944. Five of the crew were killed in action and five were taken as POWs (Stalag Luft 1, Barth).  

On December 17, 1944 B-24 (42-52025) 'Arsenic and Lace piloted by 1LT Gerald Smith, flying out of Torretta, Italy as part of the 765th Bomber Squadron, 461st Bomber Group, 49th Bomber Wing, 15th Air Force, on a raid to bomb the Odertal Oil Rifinery in Germany.  The formation was attacked by enemy aircraft and several planes were shot down.  This plane crashed near Olomouc in the present-day Czech Republic.    

This was the crews 11th mission together. (Missing Aircraft Report {MACR} 10680).
