MuseumFort Driant, also know as Feste Kronprinz, was constructed pre-World War 1 by the Germans as a part of a series of forts surrounding the city of Metz, France. It was occupied by German forces in WW1 and was part of German defenses along the Mosel River and Metz in 1944.
Visits to Fort Driant must be escorted and can be arranged through the Le Fort Driant (Feste Kronprinz)/Amicale du Fort Driant (Friends of Fort Driant) Group. Email them at: amicalefortdriant@gmail.com
A visit includes a walk around a series of Fort structures and in Kaserne (K5) that is setup to show what the Fort looked like Pre-WW1; during WW1, as well as its use during WW2 as a slave labor camp to produce military equipment. The museum primarily remembers the fighting that occurred here from September to December 1944 during the Mosel River crossings and the Battle for Metz. The exterior walk also passes by several memorials remembering where fallen US soldiers were located post war.
Le Fort Driant (Feste Kronprinz)/Amicale du Fort Driant (Friends of Fort Driant) Group has carefully preserved the aging fort and has created a space to better understand the 1944 battle that occurred within the fort complex.
The interior museum includes a large relief map of the fort, traces of the battle that occurred within the Fort, military equipment, and a "Wall of Honor" that remembers individuals of the US Forces, primarily of the 5th Infantry Division, that fought to gain control of the fort for several months.
Special thanks to Le Fort Driant (Feste Kronprinz)/Amicale du Fort Driant (Friends of Fort Driant) Group for their efforts to preserve the fort and remember this 1944 battle.
