U.S. M65 1000-pound General Purpose Bomb Monument
Details:
On the east side of the road.
MonumentMonument comprises the body of a U.S. M65 1000-pound general purpose (GP) bomb, mounted on a rough-hewn stone base adjacent to the Kreuzkapelle across the street from the railway viaduct in Altenbeken, Germany. The inscriptions on the bomb, written in German, emphasize the scale of the Allied air raids during World War II by recording their dates and magnitude.
During World War II, since the Altenbeken Viaduct was one of the most important railway bridges in central Germany, it was a key target of Allied massed bombing attacks. The rail line was cut several times in 1944 and 1945 by U.S. and U.K. airstrikes.
