B-24 #42-7609 “Lazy Lou” and C-109 #42-51766 Monument
Details:
Inside the Sudbrook Moor Golf Club.
MonumentThe monument is composed of three upright stone pillars placed side by side on a paved foundation. The left pillar bears a rectangular black plaque displaying a photograph of the nearby brick railway bridge, accompanied by an inscription describing the sites historical background. The center pillar bears a plaque displaying the insignias of the U.S. 8th and 9th Air Forces and the Airborne Troop Carrier Command, along with engraved images of the two aircraft and a Dalmatian dog named Jerry. It also lists the aircraft C-109 #42-51766 and B-24 #42-7609 'Lazy Lou' crew members, and commemorates their mid-air collision on December 18, 1944, near Carlton Scroop. (A C-109 is transport version of the B-24 long-range bomber as an air tanker.) The right pillar also bears a black plaque that presents photographs of the crew members from both aircraft, along with their names and images of the planes. All plaques are written in English, and the memorial was unveiled on December 18, 2024, marking the 80th anniversary of the crash. The monument was created by Dave Bristow.

Monument Text:
On the left pillar plaque text:
One of the two propellers that fell from 42-7609 Lazy Lou after shredding the rear control surfaces of 42-51766 during the first turn following take-off from Barkston Heath. A locomotive was stopped to prevent derailment. Other debris fell in the village and the school was narrowly missed by 42-51766 before it crashed in a fireball with no survivors. While parents ran towards the school to check on their children, the crew in Lazy Lou struggled to stay airborne heading towards RAF Cranwell. Unable to maintain altitude and airspeed they crash landed between High Wood North Rauceby and the A17 just short of Cranwells runway with two fatalities, three survivors and mortally wounded Jerry the dog.
