Monument

Carved from three blocks of Meuse stone and measuring approximately 5 meters long and 2 meters high, the monument features life-size figures of soldiers representing the 29th, 79th, and 33rd U.S. Divisions, honoring their role in the MeuseArgonne Offensive of World War I. Designed by French sculptor Henri-Patrick Stein, the project, originally conceived in 1931, was revived and was dedicated on October 8, 2025, marking the anniversary of Consenvoyes liberation.

The MeuseArgonne Offensive, fought from September 26 to November 11, 1918, was the largest and deadliest operation of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in World War I. Its goal was to break through the heavily fortified Hindenburg Line between the Argonne Forest and the Meuse River to cut off German supply routes and force their retreat. The 79th Division spearheaded the attack on Montfaucon, capturing this strategic height after intense resistance. The 29th Division advanced along the Meuse River, fighting through the Bois de Consenvoye and Bois de la Grande Montagne to secure river crossings and high ground. Meanwhile, the 33rd Division carried out critical crossings at Consenvoye and Sivry-sur-Meuse, establishing bridgeheads despite heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. Together, these divisions played key roles in pushing the German Army back toward Sedan, contributing to the collapse of their defenses and paving the way for the Armistice of November 11, 1918.
