John Paul Jones Statue

<< Back to Whitehaven

Details:

On the northern side of the road.

Statue

A life-sized bronze statue depicting Captain John Paul Jones spiking one of the 32-pounder cannons at the Half-Moon Battery, located about 250 meters from the fort on the Whitehaven shore. After securing the fort, Jones, accompanied by Midshipman Joe Green, disabled these powerful guns, which could fire over a mile, to ensure their escape while the rest of his men set out to burn the ships in the southern harbor.

Captain Jones led a raid on the English port of Whitehaven on April 23, 1778, spiking the guns of the fortress, but failing in his attempt to burn the ships in the harbor. Born in nearby Scotland, Jones knew the port well, since he started his seafaring career there at the age of 13. Despite questionable tactical success, the raid showed the audacity and reach of the nascent Continental Navy, and alerted the British to vulnerability of ports and shipping lanes along its coasts.
