PlaqueA square bronze relief mounted on a curved metal frame, featuring a relief portrait of John Paul Jones in the upper right corner and a depiction of a cannon being spiked in the lower left. The plaque commemorates the 1778 raid on Whitehaven, the only American attack on British soil, led by Jones and his crew of the USS Ranger. The plaque was installed by the Commissioners of the Harbour of Whitehaven on behalf of the townspeople as part of The Renaissance of Whitehaven A Millennium Project.

THE WHITEHAVEN BATTERY
The only unfriendly American invasion of Britain occurred at Whitehaven in the early hours of 23rd April 1778. John Paul Jones, who was apprenticed in the town, led men of the Continental Navy ashore and spiked the harbours defensive guns before making his getaway. At a ceremony witnessed by representatives of the US Navy on 27th June 1999, Jones was formally pardoned by the Commissioners of the Harbour of Whitehaven, on behalfof the people of the town.
