Liberation of Halloville Monument - XII Corps

<< Back to Halloville - Saint George's Church

Details:

Located on the right front side of the church.

Monument

A large, roughly triangular granite stone stands upright, serving as a natural pedestal for a rectangular black plaque affixed to its front. The plaque bears French and English inscriptions honoring the American soldiers of the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, and 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion who liberated the village on November 15, 1944. It displays the insignias of the 79th Infantry Division, the Halloville coat of arms, the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion, and the 315th Infantry Regiment.

On November 15, 1944, the 315th Infantry Regiment of the 79th Infantry Division attacked and liberated Halloville, France, from German forces of the 708th Volksgrenadier Division. Supported by the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion, the regiment fought intense resistance, capturing about 140 prisoners and destroying enemy armor and artillery. Their victory opened the valley route, broke the German defensive line, and allowed the 79th Division to advance toward Alsace.
