MonumentA six-foot-tall, flat marble monument in Mouacourt, France, honors the troopers of the 121st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron who fought near the Foret de Parroy between September and November 1944. At the top of the monument is the name of the unit and its Latin motto: Utcumque Ubique, Anywhere, Anytime. The monument features the names and ranks of the fallen troopers, along with the emblems of the 106th Cavalry Group and the Village of Mouacourt. The monument was dedicated on October 18th, 2025. It was funded by the Contini Family of New York. Staff Sergeant Victor M. Contini was the senior sergeant in the 121st Medical Detachment. The halftrack ambulance engraved below the inscriptions is a silent tribute to Staff Sergeant Contini, who was the inspiration for the memorial.
At the time of the battle for the Foret de Parroy, the 121st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron was one of two squadrons assigned to the 106th Cavalry Group. The Group was formed in April 1944 with elements of the 106th Cavalry Regiment, Illinois National Guard. Their higher headquarters were the XV Corps and the Seventh Army in October 1944.
The 106th Group landed in Normandy as part of the VIII Corps, First Army. A month later, it was transferred to the XII Corps, Third Army. It was finally assigned to the XV Corps, Seventh Army. The 121st Cavalry of the Seventh Army held the position along the Canal de La Marne au Rhin, which separated the Seventh and Third Army sectors. The campaign associated with the monument was for Northern France.
Note: The name on the monument is incorrectly listed as Cpl Arnold A. Grigg; the correct name should be Harold A. Grigg.
