16th Armored Division Monument

<< Back to Plzen Downtown Square

Details:

Located directly in front of the memorials.

Monument

A rectangular granite dedication slab is placed between the two main pillar monuments. It bears a gold-colored engraved inscription in English honoring the men of the 16th Armored Division for their role in the liberation of Plze in 1945, and it includes both the original event date and the dedication date.

On May 6, 1945, during the final days of World War II, Plze was liberated by the U.S. 16th Armored Division of General Pattons Third Army, supported by other American and Belgian units. The city saw little resistance as the German garrison surrendered, marking a rare instance of a major Czech city being freed by American rather than Soviet forces.
