B-24 (42-50403) Crash Site Memorial- 459th Bomber Group

The memorial remembers the crew of the B-24 (42-50403) of the 759th Bomber Squadron, 459th Bomber Group, 15th Air Force that crashed here on August 22, 1944.
On August 22, 1944, B-24 (42-50403), piloted by 1LT William Sykes, departed Guilia Airfield in Southern Italy for a mission to the Blechhammer Oil Refinery (in what is now Blachownia lska, Poland). The plane was shot down and crashed at this location. Per the plaque, all of the crew survived. Five were taken as POWs, and the others were able to escape with the help of locals and return to Italy via a special OSS Operation in Slovakia.
The information board provides details about the crew, the mission, and the subsequent crash. The information sign was dedicated in 2020, while the plaque, located on a nearby tree, has been in place for decades.
