The Tirad Pass and Samar Monument
Details:
On the southeast side of the Carlos P. Garcia Monument.
MonumentThe monument features a life-sized statue of a Filipino revolutionary, shown barefoot and clad in modest period attire. One arm is raised high, holding a bolo or spear, while the other grips a bladed weapon, a pose that evokes defiance, resistance, and preparedness for combat. Embedded in the front of the pedestal below is a rectangular plaque bearing the seal of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, which recounts the brutality of the Balangiga Massacre and the subsequent retaliatory actions carried out by U.S. forces during the PhilippineAmerican War, emphasizing Samars devastation and its description as a howling wilderness.
On the morning of September 28, 1901, in the coastal town of Balangiga, Filipino resistance fighters launched a carefully coordinated surprise attack on U.S. Army troops stationed there during the PhilippineAmerican War. At around 6:30 a.m., as American soldiers began their day, the church bells of Balangiga rang, signaling the strike. Armed Filipinos, many disguised as townspeople and laborers, quickly overwhelmed the 9th U.S. Infantry Regiment garrison, using bolos, captured rifles, and improvised weapons. The sudden assault resulted in heavy American casualties and the capture of arms and supplies, making it one of the most devastating defeats suffered by U.S. forces during the conflict.
