On February 11, 1944, B-17G #42-31388, assigned to the 306th Bomb Group, 423rd Bomb Squadron, 8th Air Force, participated in a large-scale bombing mission over Germany. Impeded by cloud cover and intense anti-aircraft fire, the aircraft sustained heavy damage, became separated from its formation, and was attacked by enemy fighters while attempting to return to England. One crew member was killed during the engagement, while the remaining airmen bailed out over the Oise region of France, some successfully evading capture and others becoming prisoners of war, before the unmanned aircraft continued briefly and crashed near Campremy.
