B-17G # 42-102565 'Ugly Duckling' Crash Marker
Details:
On the east side of the road.
MarkerA tall, slender crash-pole memorial features a blue-and-white vertical post crowned with a stylized orange metal flame, symbolizing both the aircraft's fiery destruction and the enduring remembrance of the fallen crew. Affixed at mid-height is a rectangular white plaque inscribed in French, bearing the memorial inscription that identifies the aircraft and lists the names, ranks, and roles of the crew members.
On November 26, 1944, B-17G The Ugly Duckling of the 398th Bombardment Group was returning from a bombing mission to Misburg, Germany, when it was hit by German anti-aircraft fire near Zwolle, Netherlands. The aircraft became uncontrollable over Lake IJsselmeer, and the crew abandoned the bomber by parachute. Due to the extremely cold water temperatures, all nine crew members perished within about 30 minutes. Their bodies sank to the bottom, preserved by the cold, and were gradually recovered between March and June 1945 by fishermen or washed ashore along the Dutch coast.

Monument Text:

English translation:
After the war, the remains of an American bomber were found in the lot near this pole. Boeing B-17G 42-102565 of the 398th Bombardment Group, a four-engine aircraft, was returning from its target of Misburg to its home base at Nuthampstead on November 26, 1944, when it was hit by German anti-aircraft fire near Zwolle. The aircraft was apparently no longer controllable, and the crew decided to bail out. All perished in the icy waters of Lake IJssel.
