The memorial remembers the B-24 (42-50961), the Miner Crew of the 702nd Bomber Squadron, 445th Bomber Group which was shot down on September 27, 1944 during the Kassel Mission.

The single largest Bomb Group loss in World War Two occurred on 27 September 1944, during the infamous Kassel Mission Raid. The lead-ship of the 445th Bombardment Group made a navigational error over the Initial Point (I.P.) decided in attacking an alternate target. As a result  the 445th BG 31 of their 35 Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers. 25 Liberators would crash in Germany, two in occupied territory in France, one in Belgium and one in England. Only four Liberators made it back to their home station in Tibenham.  117 US aviators plus a fighter pilot, who tried to assist the bombers, lost their lives that day. 121 men became Prisoners of War.  Some 12 men were killed after landing safely. T he Germans lost 18 pilots killed and 29 aircraft.

The Miner crew in B-24J, 42-50961, was flying the lead-ship of the 702nd Bombardment Squadron. On that day they had two extra crew members, giving them a total of 12 men.

German reports state that 10 crew members bailed out and two men died, before the bomber crashed in Grebenau, Germany. . It is most likely that both Co-Pilot 1LT Chima and Radio-Operator SSG Gilfoil were killed in action possibly at the hands of their captors.

Of the 10 B-24s from the 702nd BS, only one would make it back to Allied territory where she crash landed at Tibenham.

The crew consisted of:
Pilot: 1LT Reginald R. Miner
Co-Pilot: 1LT Virgil Chima
