American Woman WW2 Monument Normandy
Details:

StatueThe carved stone monument comprises a life-sized standing figure of a woman on an inscribed rectangular base. In her right hand, the woman holds a folded U.S. flag across her chest, and in her left hand, along her side, she holds a letter.
The monument is dedicated to the memory and commitment of women during World War II, paying a solemn and profound tribute to the courage, dignity, and resilience of the nurses, auxiliaries, volunteers, as well as soldiers wives and mothers who, in the shadows but with determination, played a crucial role in the D-Day operations and the liberation of France. Whether they served at the front, in field hospitals, in logistics, or in intelligence, these women participated fully in the war effort, often at the risk of their own lives.
This initiative, led by the local association Picauville se souviens, is part of a desire to highlight the often-forgotten contributions of these women in the military history of the Liberation. The statue was entirely hand-sculpted by artist Dimitri Charrault, whose expressive work captures both the tenderness and strength of these female figures. More than a tribute, this monument is a call to remembrance and recognition, a place of contemplation that completes Picauvilles memorial trail, inscribing the essential role played by women in the Allied victory.
U.S. and French officials dedicated the Monument on 4 June 2024, the 80th anniversary of Allied landings at Normandy during Operation OVERLORD.
