2LT Fred Clifgard Cenotaph -14th Fighter Group
Details:
In the churchyard next to the war memorial.
CenotaphA stone cross with a brass inscribed plaque.
The cenotaph remembers 2LT Fred Clifgard who crashed nearby on March 1, 1945 while flying the P-38 (44-23187) of the 148th Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, 15th Air Force while attacking trains south of Brno. The pilot's remains were buried at the local church, but under the name Clark Shiler. The mistake was made because a silver bracelet belonging to Clifford's fiancée, Shirley Clark, was found at the crash site. This name also appeared in the post-war SNB investigation report. The American exhumation commission in 1946 also based its findings on the report. Since no identification tag was found and the US Air Force did not register a pilot named Clark Shiler, the remains were buried in Neupre, Belgium, in a grave marked "Unknown". Only later, after the identity was established, were the remains transported to the United States at the request of the family. He was 19 years old at the time of the crash.
