On May 10, 1944, a B-17G (42-31685) 'Pete's Playhouse'  with a crew of ten, took part in a bombing mission targeting structures in Wiener Neustadt, Austria flyiong out of Celone, Italy as part of the 775th Bomber Squadron, 463rd bomber Group. While on its way to the target, the B-17G was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire, causing it to crash near crashed near Vöstenhof, about 20km SW of Wiener Neustadt, Austria. Five members of the crew were able to parachute from the aircraft before it crashed, and these men eventually returned to duty. German authorities and eyewitnesses report that the aircraft collided into the side of a mountain and exploded, with the plane being completely destroyed. The Germans found three bodies at the crash site and buried them in a local cemetery, and American Graves Registration personnel were able to recover them after the war. The remains of the last two crew members (Dwyer & Boros) have not been located or identified.

The crew included:

Pilot Stanley N. Dwyer, Co-pilot: Manley H. Dale Jr, Navigator: Francis G. Gilhooley, Bombardier: Prestcott C. Piper, Flight Engineer/Top Turret gunner: John J. Boros, Tail gunner: William Olfenius (5 Killed in Action); Radio Operator: George D. Mitchell, Ball turret gunner: Eugene E. Parker Jr, Right Waist gunner: Stephen A. Milewski, Left Waist gunner: John E. Boyett Jr (4 Prisoner of War)

Some mix-up in the Missing Air Crew Report numbers. 42-31685 is listed as MACR 4723 but is in fact MACR 4660 (which has the A/C Serial Number as "42-31804" 'Irish Orphans' and the names of the Dwyer crew...) #42-31804 was lost the same day, with Pilot Gerald F. Gowen and crashed near Lichtenwörth, 8km NE of Wiener Neustadt.
