A family headstone that includes the name of the soldier.

Matthew Smith was born in 1889 in Portadown, North Ireland. He immigrated tImmigrated to Massachusetts, USA in 1913 on the SS Laconia.  He Served in Co. C, 14th Machine Gun Battalion, 5th Infantry Division and was killed in action on October 14, 1918 in an attack on Cunel and Bois des Rappes in France during the Battle of the Meuse-Argonne . His remains returned to Ireland in 1922 on the SS Millwater. Buried St Johns Catholic Church, Eglish, Tartaraghan, Co. Armagh, N. Ireland.
