Monument

The site contains a monument commemorating the contributions of the 14th and 11th Armored Cavalry Regiments (14ACR and 11 ACR) along the inner-German border during 1951-1991. Monument consists of a vertical strip and plaque made of stainless steel and mounted to a large field stone, and is located alongside an M16 Halftrack with .50 caliber machine gun quad-mount within the Point Alpha complex, which the units occupied during the Cold War.

After conducting constabulary operations at the end of World War II, 14ACR reorganized to perform reconnaissance and security operations along the inner-German border between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic during 1951-1972. 14ACR operated from bases near Fulda, Bad Kissingen, and Bad Hersfeld, Germany.

11ACR deployed to Vietnam during 1966-1972. During the drawdown of U.S. forces in Vietnam in early 1972, 11ACR was inactivated in stages and subsequently reactivated in Germany by reflagging 14ACR elements still in Germany during 1972-1973. Along the border, 11ACR operated several Observation Posts (OPs), including 1st Squadron at OP Alpha near Rasdorf; 2nd Squadron at OP Tennessee near the Eußenhausen/Meiningen border crossing; and 3rd Squadron at OP Romeo near Wildeck-Bosserode and OP India near Ringgau-Lüderbach. After German reunification in October 1990, dissolution of the Warsaw Pact in July 1991, and dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991, the regiment ended its mission along the border.

After deployments to Turkey, northern Iraq, and Kuwait at the end of the Gulf War, as the need for US forces in Europe decreased, the 11 ACR was inactivated in Germany on 15 October 1993, reactivated in 1994 as the U.S. Army Opposing Force at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California.
