First column text:

Jest marzec, rok 1945. II wojna swiatowa chyli sie ku koncowi. Wojska radzieckie i polskie stoja na linii Odry i przygotowuja sie do ataku na Berlin. Wojska alianckie tymczasem prowadza systematyczne bombardowania strategicznych punktów hitlerowskich Niemiec. 8 Armia Powietrzna USAAF skupia sie na lotniskach i zakladach przemyslowych. Eskadry bombowców B - 17 startuja z Lavenham w Suffolk w Anglii i atakuja równiez Berlin.

18 marca 1945 dochodzi do jednego z najwiekszych nalotów na Berlin. Bierze w nim udzial blisko tysiac bombowców eskortowanych przez kilkaset mysliwców. Dochodzi do tragicznej w skutkach pomylki: Wracajaca znad Berlina grupe bombowców scigaja niemieckie mysliwce. Dwóch czlonków zalogi - mechanik Leonard Marino i radiotelegrafista John Sunberg zaginelo bez sladu. Ich szczatków nie odnaleziono do dzis

March of 1945. The World War II was on the brink of end. Soviet and Polish armies were standing at Oders bank, preparing for the assault on Berlin. At the same time the Allies were systematically bombarding strategic points in Nazi Germany. The Eighth Air Force was attacking airports and industrial areas. Squadrons of B-17 from Lavenham, Suffolk, England were also taking part in the assault on Berlin.

On 18 March 1945 almost a thousand bombers along with hundreds escort fighters hit Berlin in one of the biggest air raids on that city. Between 1:00 pm-1:30 pm a tragic event took place. A group of bombers coming back from Berlin was being chased by German fighters. Russians sent their fighter to help the Americans but for unknown reasons, probably by mistake, they shelled one of the flying fortresses - a B-17 bomber. The plane crashed near the village of Mosina, the crew members bailed out and landed here, at this place. Two of them a mechanic Leonard Marino and a radio operator John Sunberg were lost in action. Their remains have not yet been found

W 2014 r. witniccy pasjonaci historii i wojskowosci pod kierownictwem Dariusza Jaworskiego i Slawomira Kunitza podjeli poszukiwania szczatków zaginionych pilotów Leonarda Marino i Johna Sunberga.

Kilka miesiecy trwalo zalatwianie wymaganych formalnosci. To tam rozbil sie samolot, z którego piloci katapultowali sie w Mosinie. Poszukiwania szczatków amerykanskich lotników w Mosinie beda prowadzone do skutku. Jestesmy im winni pamiec i godny pochówek w wojskowej kwaterze na cmentarzu.

In 2014 military history buffs from Witnica led by Dariusz Jaworski and Slawomir Kunitz with the support provided by the crew of TVP Historia TV show Bylo, nie minelo (trans. Passed, but not past), Adam Sikorski and Strzelcy (trans. Rifles) from JS 4044 have commenced to search for any remains of lost pilots Leonardo Marino and John Sunberg. In March, using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) they marked an area, where ground had been burrowed years ago. Their choice was also based on witnesses words. They claimed that they had seen nameless graves in this area. After couple of months when all formalities have been completed, it was finally possible to check what the ground hides. The chosen place was dug up by 10 men with shovels. Unfortunately no bones or anything indicating that here the two pilots could have been buried has been found. The only things discovered were: a shell casing, a horseshoe, a military tent peg and some rusty metal. However, plenty of plane parts have been found at swamps near the village of Wysoka, a dozen kilometers from Mosina. That is the place, where Marino and Sunbergs plane crashed. The search for the remains of American airmen will continue as long as necessary. We owe them our memory and a decent military burial in a cemetery.
