Monument

A white concrete rectangular upright wall with an inscribed panel attached to the front.

The memorial remembers the crew of the B-17 (44-4656) of the 32nd Bomber Squadron, 301st Bomber Group that was shot down near here on February 12, 1945 after a mission to Wiener Neustadt, Austria.  Eight of the crew were taken as POWs; two were KIA.

Memorial was dedicated in July 2025.

Monument Text:

The text is written in Hungarian and English.  The English reads:

On February 13th of 1945 a B-17G bomber

went down in the boundary of  Zalaszanto.

The bomber with the serial number 44-6546

was assigned of he 32nd Bomber Squadron 

of the 301st Bomber Group (H) of the 

15th Air Force. During the raid against 

Wiener Neustadt the anti-aircraft fire hit tke

left wing and was unable to return to base due

to the damage of the hit and crashed into a hillside

in Derekhegy. Eight of the crew survivied and they

 became Prisoners of War. Two members of the crew were killed.
