B-24 ' Flying Rumor' (42-50447) & Partisan Assistance Memorial - Operation Carpetbagger

The memorial remembers the B-24 (42-50447) 'Flying Rumor of the 859th Bomber Squadron attached to the 15th Special Group (Provisional), (renamed the 2641st Special Group). "Flying Rumor' was assigned an Operation Carpetbagger mission to resupply Czech Partisans on the night of April 16/17 1945 (Target 'Ely 4') near Brno (Czechia) and was shot down by a German night fighter. The entire crew was able to parachute to safety and were rescued by local partisans and resistance. The crew fought with the local resistance and was eventually able to cross into Soviet lines and then pass to US lines by the war's end.

Sgt Robert J. Webber USAAF - Tail Gunner
This plane (42-50447) may have also had the name 'Buzz Tail II' prior to this mission. The 859th Bomber Squadron had previously been assigned to the 492nd Bomber Group flying 'Carpetbagger' missions from Harrington in England. About December 1944 the 859th was transferred to Italy and flew missions from near Brindisi.
