<< Back to Hargnies -South

Details:

Off the road about 50 meters in an opening in the woods.

Monument

A large field stone with a plaque attached to the front along with an information sign.

The memorial remembers the participants of Operation Citronelle. 'Citronelle' was an Allied special forces operation led by the Special Operations Executive, supported by the OSS,  to parachute a liaison team into the Ardennes region of Belgium to establish the strength of the local resistance forces and to aid in the development of these forces into an effective small-scale offensive and intelligence-gathering group (12 April 1944 onward). The team included one American OSS Officer, Captain Victor J. Layton.  In late August 1944, further OSS Jedburgh teams joined these operations.

Bitter fighting ensued over the course of the next few month. A monument was erected in 1994 at the initiative of former resistance fighters. On the outskirts of Revin stands a monument labelled, 'Aux Mortes Du Maquis des Manises' which bears over 100 names of young French people killed during these operations.
