1st Infantry Division Monument

<< Back to Wurzburg Alter Park

Details:

On the south side of the road.

Monument

The monument consists of a large rectangular stone pedestal set on a broad, multi-tiered stepped base, with the 1st Infantry Division insignia displayed at the center of its front face. It commemorates the 1st Infantry Division and its history at Leighton Barracks in Würzburg and is one of the remaining memorial features of the former Victory Park, where monuments honoring the division and its soldiers once stood before the division relocated to the United States.

The 1st Infantry Division was headquartered at Leighton Barracks in Würzburg from 1945 to 1955 and again from 1996 to 2006. During its second stay, the Big Red One deployed forces to operations abroad while maintaining its headquarters in Würzburg, before formally departing Germany in 2006 and relocating to Fort Riley, Kansas.
