On the base of the monument.

Plaque

A bronze memorial plaque commemorating 2nd Lt. Lewis C. Williams of the 100th Bomb Group, who died when his aircraft was severely damaged during a combat mission on November 9, 1944. While the plaque says that Williams was a First Lieutenant, Army records show him to have been a Second Leiutenant.

2LT Williams was the pilot of B-17 (42-31986) 'Once in a While' aka 'Bommerang' of the 349th Bomber Squadron, 100th Bomber Group; he was the only crewman killed while bailing out of the damaged aircraft on November 9, 1944 after a mission to Saarbrücken.
