MonumentThe Anglo-American World War II Monument, also known as the Milna Allied Military Cemetery Memorial, features a large stone cross atop a pyramid-shaped base. A commemorative plaque honors 29 American servicemen who lost their lives during World War II on Vis Island, Croatia. The monument stands at the site of the former Allied military cemetery, established in 1944, where these servicemen were originally buried. The cemetery site was restored as part of the commemoration, and the memorial was dedicated on June 19, 2018, by the American and British embassies in Zagreb.
Monument Text:
MILNA ALLIED MILITARY CEMETERY
On this site, in the spring of 1944, a vineyard was cleared to construct a cemetery for the burial of Allied servicemen who were then serving beside Partisan Soldiers & Sailors of the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, in order to secure the island of Vis from reconquest by Axis forces, establish an emergency airstrip, and from which to launch combined raids against Axis forces. This cemetery would eventually shelter the graves of 78 British, Commonwealth, and American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, but the post-war years saw the remains of these fallen servicemen relocated elsewhere.
