Sallen Liberation Memorial
Details:
The memorial is situated at the south end of the parking lot south of the church. The memorial faces north toward the church, away from the D-181A, and is directly across the street from the pond.
Monument
The memorial consists of a bronze plaque mounted on a natural rock base. The plaque includes a brief history of the campaign by American and British forces which led to the liberation of Sallen and surrounding towns as well as a map. Text is embossed in both English and French.

Le front, situe à la jonction des forces américaines et britanniques, s’arrête dans notre région du 13 juin au 30 juillet. Les armées allies se succèdent à SALLEN.
La 1er D.I. américaine arrive le 12 juin d’Omaha Beach. Elle reste dans ce secteur (le 16ieme et 18ieme R.I. à SALLEN et CORMOLAIN, le 25ieme a CAUMONT) jusqu’au 14 juillet, puis part a BRIQUEVILLE se préparer a l’opération COBRA.
La 5ieme D.I. américaine tient ce secteur du 14 au 24 juillet pour ensuite délivrer VIDOUVILLE.
La 11ieme D.B. britannique, présente du 24 au 30 juillet, effectue la grande offensive dite BLUECOAT vers LA LANDE SUR DROME après un intense tir d’artillerie.

Situated at the junction of American and British forces, the front crossed this region from June 13th to July 30th, when the allied armies succeeded each other SALLEN.
The 1st American Infantry Division arrived here from Omaha Beach on June 12th. They stayed in this sector (the 16th and 18th Infantry Regiments in SALLEN and CORMOLAIN, the 26th IR in CAUMONT) until July 14th, then went to BRIQUEVILLE to prepare for Operation Cobra.
The 5th American ID held this sector from July 14th to 24th, and then relieved VIDOUVILLE.
The 11th Armoured was here from July 24th to 30th. After intensive artillery fire they launched the offensive known as BLUECOAT towards LA LANDE SUR DROME.

In memory of the sacrifice of allied and French soldiers, resistance fighters, deportees and civilian victims, many of whom paid for the victory over Nazi Germany with their lives.
