Isolated Burial

A concrete headstone with a circle carved into it and a cross in the center of the circle. The name and information are carved into the headstone underneath the cross. 

The isolated site of burial is that of Ervin David Shaw, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Signal Reserve Corps and a pilot during World War I. In England, Shaw was attached to the 48th Squadron, RAF, British Expeditionary Force. He died on July 9, 1918 near Grandcourt during aerial combat. He is buried in a common grave with Sgt T. W. Smith. 

Shaw Air Foce Base in Sumter, South Carolina is named in his honor.
