"Adopting the Cross of Lorraine as an official unit insignia after their valor at Montfaucon in the Meuse-Argonne during WWI, the 79th Infantry Division returned to France 26 years later via Utah Beach on June 12th-14th, 1944. Under the command of Major General Ira T. Wyche throughout the European campaign, their American superiors and their German foes regarded them as one of the best attack divisions in the U.S. Army.
Enduring four months of continuous combat operations in France & Belgium on the way to Lorraine, the "Fighting 79th" was the first American division to enter Cherbourg and first across the Seine river. Overcoming bitter resistance at Fort du Roule, La Haye du Puits and Meurthe river crossing, the division led the attack into the brutal Foret de Puits and nearby Embermenil in September & October. The 79th joined the XV Corps campaign toward the Saverne Gap with the 44th Infantry Division and French 2nd Armored Division on November 13th, 1944.
La 79ème division d'infanterie a adopté comme insigne officiel de l'unité la Croix de Lorraine pour leur bravoure à Montfaucon dans la Meuse-Argonne pendant la Première Guerre Mondiale. L'unité rentre en France 26 ans plus tard via "Utah Beach" le 12-14 juin 1944. Tout au long de la campagne européenne, sous le commandement du major-général Ira T. Le 79ème a lancé sa campagne vers le Gap Saverne avec la 44ème division d'infanterie et la 2ème division blindée française le 13 novembre 1944"
