This monument was erected by the United States of America to commemorate the first offensive action by a large American unit in World War I.  The battle of Cantigny marked the first entry into line of an American division on an active battlefront.  The United States Army’s First Infantry Division, under the command of the French X Corps, was assigned the task of dislodging the German forces from the high ground in and around the village of Cantigny.  On 28 May, 1918, with the 28^th Infantry Regiment in the lead, the village was wrested from the enemy, who immediately launched a series of vicious counterattacks.  In spite of the German determination to re-take the village and surrounding area, the American forces retained every inch of land they had gained from the enemy.  The division remained in line here a total of 73 days and suffered almost 5,200 casualties.  Many of the American soldiers who died in the fighting are buried in the Somme American Cemetery at Bony (Aisne) approximately 50 miles to the northeast of Cantigny.  Maintenance of this monument is the responsibility of the American Battle Monuments Commission, an agency of the United States Government

Ce monument fut érigé par les Etats-Unis d’Amérique pour commémorer la première offensive d’une importante unité américaine lors de la Grande Guerre.  La bataille de Cantigny marqua l’arrivée en ligne d’une division américaine sur le front des combats.  La Première Division d’Infanterie américaine, sous le commandement du Xème Corps français, eut pour mission de déloger les Allemands des hauteurs de Cantigny et de ses alentours.  Le 28 mai 1918, sous la conduite du 28ème Régiment d’Infanterie, le village fut arraché aux Allemands qui ripostèrent immédiatement par une série de contre-attaques brutales.  Malgré la détermination de ces derniers à reprendre le village et ses environs, les Américains conservèrent chaque pouce du terrain pris à l’ennemi.  La division resta en ligne 73 jours et perdit 5 200 hommes.  Un grand nombre de soldats américains qui trouvèrent la mort au cours des combats sont enterrés au cimetière militaire américain de Somme, situé à Bony, dans l’Aisne, à environ 80 km au nord-est de Cantigny.  L’entretien de ce monument est assuré la Commission des monuments de guerre américains, une  agence gouvernementale des Etats-Unis.
