The plaque is located on the south side of the Ecoles Municipales building. From the street the monument may be blocked by the “De Gaulle” bus stop. Plaque
The black stone monument recognizes (in French) the sacrifices of the 3rd Infantry Division during the liberation of Vesoul as Allied Forces moved through Eastern France and into Germany. The monument depicts the coat of arms of Vesoul, the French and American flags, and the insignia of the 3rd Infantry Division. The “Rock of the Marne,” a nicknamed which the unit earned while fighting in France during the First World War, serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the 3rd Infantry Division during the liberation of France and the importance of Vesoul as a stepping stone into the Vosges mountains.
