Monument

A large stone memorial inscribed in French; a map displaying the air battle over the area sits at the base of the monument.

The monument remembers LT Theodore R. Hostetter an American who flew with the Royal Air Force (trained in Canada) during World War 1. Hostetter was killed near this memorial when he was shot down by a group of German fighters, which reportedly included the German Ace Robert Greim. LT Hostetter was flying a Sopwith Camel for the 3rd Fighter Squadron of the RAF when he was shot down.

Hostetter is buried in the Somme American Cemetery.

The monument was paid for by his mother, Madame Burchard-Hostetter, spouse of prominent American businessmen of the age. She also made financial contributions to assist the building of a local school, named Ecole Hostetter, where a plaque was placed in the remembrance of her son.

The site overlooks the canal and the site where LT Hostetter's airplane went down.  LT Hostetter was flying a Sopwith Camel for the 3rd Fighter Squadron of the RAF when he was shot down by German Ace von Greim, who claimed his 25th kill.
