Sergeant Cuthbert Crew Memorial

Details:

On the east side of the road, across from the Felsenkeller building. Monument

A black, rounded rectangle slab monument facing the square. Two plaques are attached on it. The first plaque was written poetically in German and the second commemorates the crew.

 

On April 18, 1945 at the intersection of Karl Heine Str. and Zschochersche Str., Leipzig, Germany, the crew of Sgt. George J. Cuthbert, Jr. was Killed in Action after their M4 tank was hit by a Panzerfaust during the city's liberation.

Merseburger Straße

Kein Chuss

Nur Blumen Fliegen auf die Panzer

ganz vorn Aurora and Cleopatra

Höhe Felsenkeller

Der Schlag aus einer Panzerfaust

Cleopatra getroffen

Das Projektil frisst sich durch Stahl

Der Panzer brennt

und Menschen brennen

Gegenfeuer schlägt zurück

Und Steine splittern

Blut versickert

Und alle Schützen fast noch Kinder

Am Morgen

der den Frieden näher bringt

am Morgen

der das Morden stoppen soll

noch sieben Tote

Jungs un Uniform

ein andres Leben schon vor Augen
