Plaque

A brass plaque depicting the May 1945 liberation of the town by the a US Army Officer whose grandparents emigrated from the town.

Lieutenant Colonel Matt Konop of Two Rivers, Wisconsin was a second generation Czech speaking US Army Officer who lead the 2nd Infantry Division Advance Party into Domažlice, on May 4, 1945.  He went to his Grandfathers family shop – in the J. Hruska building, and the town was liberated by “one of their own”. A photo of this joyous occasion was taken and serves as the relief on the brass plaque.

The town was completely liberated the next day, May 5, by the 2nd Infantry Division.

This memorial plaque hangs on the J. Hruska Building in the Two Rivers “Sister City” of Domazlice, Czech Republic, to honor Matt Konop for his role in liberating Domazlice, the city of his grandparents, in 1945. Matt Konop became an honorary citizen of Domazlice on May 5, 2016.

Domazlice and Two Rivers became Sister Cities in May 2017.

A play, “The Accidental Hero” depicts the life of Konop and the liberation of this town.
