Shipdham Memorial Cross

<< Back to Shipdham

Details:

To the right very near the 44th Bomb Group marker. The memorial cross is standing in the churchyard to the south of the church, opposite the church door.

Monument

A rough finished granite wheel cross, with intertwined design on the cross itself. The cross stands upon a three-tiered octagonal base, the front bearing the general commemoration for WW1, flanked on the different tiers with the names of 29 men who fell in WW1. These are arranged in rough alphabetical order, giving first name and surname. Those who fell in WW2 are listed on the reverse, which lists 10 names, although 2 of these died post-war, together with a general commemoration to the men of the 8th USAAF (US Armed Forces). The whole sits upon an octagonal platform, surrounded by gravel, granite posts, and a chain fence.
