B-17 42-5906 'Sondra Kay' Memorial
Details:
On the east side of the road, beside the parish war memorial cross.
A rectangular, black, slate tablet affixed on a small marble stone base. The plaque is inscribed in English in white lettering. The memorial was erected for the 60th anniversary of World War II.
On 16 September 1943, the crew of the Sondra Kay, a B17 Flying Fortress and part of the American 388th Bombardment Group based at Knettishall, Suffolk, came down at Upper Cilgee farm, Llanyre, two miles from Llandrindod Wells. The plane had been on a raid on German U-boat pens at La Pallice in southwest France. It had been diverted to an airstrip near Presteigne but because of the bad weather had failed to find it. All men aboard were killed in the crash.
