Boreham Airfield Monument (394th Bomber Group)

<< Back to Boreham Airfield

Details:

On the south side of the junction.

Monument

A stone pillar with straight vertical sides and a pedimented top on a single-level stone base. On the front is the dedication on two panels that are inscribed in English in incised and black lettering. At the top of the higher panel is the blue badge of the Essex Anglo American Association. On the left face of the pillar is a metal plaque with the second part of the dedication and the names of those who died. The monument was originally erected by the Essex Anglo-American Goodwill Association, a short-lived organization founded in the late 1940s. In more recent times, the Chelmsford Squadron of the Air Training Corps has painted and overseen the memorial however when more major renovation work was required, it was agreed that the Parish Council would undertake this work. Prior to carrying out the work, the Parish Council consulted with the 394th Bomber Group Association (based in the USA) and the group generously offered to donate $1,200 towards the cost of the renovation work. A rededication and remembrance service was held at the war memorial on 3 June 2010.

RAF Boreham was opened in 1944, it was used by the United States Army Air Forces. Boreham was known as USAAF Station AAF-161 with the call sign "JM". The first use of Boreham airfield was by the 394th Bombardment Group, arriving from Michigan with four Squadrons of Martin Marauders.

Operational squadrons of the group were:

  • 584th Bomb Squadron (K5)
  • 585th Bomb Squadron (4T)
  • 586th Bomb Squadron (H9)
  • 587th Bomb Squadron (5W)

The 394th was moved on 24th July to RAF Holmsley South and was transferred back to RAF control and the 315th Troop Carrier Group in March 1945, which flew 80 Douglas C-47 Skytrains to drop men of the British 6th Airborne Division during Operation Varsity, the assault on the Rhine River. The airfield was closed in 1945.
