Isolated Burial

A civilian grave made of inscribed dark gray stone with a large cross.

Private First Class Charles “Chuck” Roegiers was born named “Karel” in Eeklo, Belgium in 1910.  In 1920 he immigrated with his family to Michigan in the US.  He enlisted in the US Army and served in the Company B of the 447th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion.

Chuck’s unit came ashore at Normandy on June 7, 1944 and served in Patton’s 3rd Army during the push across France.  During the “Battle of the Bulge” the 447th was attached to the 28th Infantry Division conducting defensive operations in Luxembourg. On December 17, 1944, Roegiers was killed near Wiltz, Luxembourg early in the battle.

After the war, Roegiers family requested he be buried in his home town of Eeklo, Belgium
