A brass inscribed plaque attached to the brown stone base of an obelisk.

 

The plaque remembers PFC Theodore Vinther of the 185th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division "Sunburst".  PFC Vinther was key to the March 1945 attack to rapidly secure the Bago Bridge which lead to the rapid conquest of the city of Bacolod.  

 

This battle was part of the US 8th Army (LTG Robert Eichelberger)

Southern Philippines Campaign (February-July 1945) Operation Victor I, which included landings on several islands to include this action on Los Negros Island.

 

 March 29 in Bacolod is remembered as Vinther Day. 

Monument Text:

PFC. Theodore C. Vinther, killed in action on March 29, 1945 (while) participating in a dangerous mission to secure Bago Bridge and thereby hasten the Liberation of Bacolod City.  (This Monument is) In recognition of our eternal debt of gratitude to him and to the innumerable thousands who like him made supreme sacrifice so that the Philippines might be a land of freemen.
