17th Airborne and 11th Armored Divisions Monument

Adjacent to the church, on the left front side next to the town war memorial. Monument


The monument includes two inscribed polished marble plaques with associated information signs and two flagpoles. 

 

The plaques and information signs remember the 17th Airborne “Scions” and the 11th Armored “Lightning” Divisions actions during and after the Battle of the Bulge”.  

 

The information signs behind the plaques recount the battle in detail. The site lies next to the 194th Glider Infantry Square on the “Chemin de la Liberte” (Freedom Trail).

 

Monument Text:

The text on the two plaques are inscribed in English and French.

 

The 17th Airborne Division plaque reads in English:

 

Symbols of the 17th Airborne Division; 194th Glider Infantry Regiment; and 550th Airborne Infantry Battalion

 

During the winter of 1944-1945, the village of Houmont

Was, for several days, the site of intense fighting

For freedom

 

Its residents have not forgotten their American liberators

and show them recognition and eternal gratitude
