<< Back to Sokolov

Details:

Near a group of trees about 20 meters from the road between two high rise apartment buildings. Marker

A low inscribed stone with polished face with a map of the camp.

The marker remembers Concentration Camp XIIIB (Falkenau an der Eger) which was a sub-camp of the Flossenburg Concentration Camp.  The camp was liberated by the 16th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division on May 6, 1945.  The marker also remembers the famous American Movie Director, Samuel Fuller, a sergeant in the 16th Infantry, who filmed his first movie at the camp documenting the horrible conditions:  "Falkenau, The Impossible".

Samuel Fuller subsequently produced numerous movies to include the "Big Red One" in 1980.  Fuller served in the 1st Infantry Division for the entire war, from North Africa through the Czech Republic.

The 1st  Infantry Division was recognized as a liberating unit by the US Army's Center of Military History and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1993. The 1st Infantry Division also liberated the concentration camp at Zwodau (Svatava).
