A Philippine Historic Marker flanked by the statue of a soldier.


The marker remembers the July-August 1945 Battle of Mayoyao Ridge.  The battle of one of the last of the war in the Pacific during WW2 Luzon campaign.  A combined force of US and Philippine forces assaulted and defeated the enemy stronghold.  The leader of the effort was an American Officer, Donald Blackburn, who led Philippine guerrilla efforts after Bataan and is known as one of the founders of the modern US Special Forces.

THE CLASH TOOK PLACE HERE BETWEEN THE JAPANESE FORCES AND THE USAFIP-NL JOINT FORCE INCLUDING THE 1ST BATTALION, 14TH INFANTRY; 3RD BATTALION, AND SOME ELEMENTS OF THE 11TH INFANTRY, FROM 25 JULY 1945 TO 7 AUGUST 1945, WHEN MAYOYAO WAS RECOVERED FROM THE HANDS OF THE INVADER. THE BATTLE ENDED BEFORE AUGUST 9, 1945. THIS WAS THE LAST BATTLE BEFORE GENERAL TOMOYUKI YAMASHITA SURRENDERED AT KIANGAN, IFUGAO, ON SEPTEMBER 2, 1945.
