Plaque

A rectangular white plaque commemorating the soldiers of the 79th Infantry Division, 6th Armored Division, and the 8th Infantry Division who died on July 29, 1944. The plaque is written in French and has the insignias of the three divisions.

The liberation of Heugueville during World War II involved coordinated efforts by the 79th Infantry Division, the 6th Armored Division, and the 8th Infantry Division. These divisions were part of the broader Allied campaign to push German forces out of occupied France following the D-Day landings in Normandy.

The 79th Infantry Division, known for its fierce fighting capabilities, was instrumental in liberating various towns across Normandy, including Heugueville. The division had been heavily involved in operations around the Cotentin Peninsula and moved southwards as part of the broader push to liberate France.

Simultaneously, the 6th Armored Division provided crucial support with its armored units, which were vital in breaking through German defensive lines. The division's mobility and firepower allowed it to strike quickly and effectively, contributing significantly to the liberation efforts.

The 8th Infantry Division, which had been engaged in intense fighting throughout the Normandy campaign, played a key role in securing and holding liberated areas, ensuring that German forces could not re-establish their positions.

Together, these divisions facilitated the liberation of Heugueville and other strategic locations, advancing the Allied front lines deeper into occupied France and eventually leading to the liberation of the country.
