Monument

A rectangular granite monument bearing a rectangular black plaque commemorating Cpl Dovedytis who died on August 29, 1944. The monument as well as the plaque are inscribed in French in gold and incised lettering.

The liberation of Mitry-Mory took place in late August 1944, as Allied forces continued their rapid advance through northern France following the successful D-Day landings in Normandy. By this time, German forces were in retreat, attempting to establish defensive positions while the Allies pushed toward Paris. Mitry-Mory became the site of significant fighting as the U.S. 4th Infantry Division, including the 8th Infantry Regiment, engaged German defenders.

On August 29, 1944, Corporal Frank C. Dovedytis of the 8th Infantry Regiment was killed during the battle for Mitry-Mory. His unit, part of F Company, was advancing alongside local French Resistance fighters to liberate the town from German occupation. Dovedytis and his comrades faced stiff resistance from German forces entrenched in defensive positions. During one of these engagements, Dovedytis was fatally wounded by a shot to the neck while attacking a farm held by German troops.
