On the slopes of the Vosges in this plain of Alsace in deep snow and twenty degrees below zero temperatures,  French soldiers of Africa along with soldiers of the United States of America, integrated into the First French Army and under the orders of General of Lattre de Tassigny forced the victory in the keen fights of the Battle of Colmar, January 20 to February 9, 1945.
