On the outside front wall of the fire station.  Plaque A stone plaque with French text honoring Sergeant John Shirly of the 3rd Infantry Division, who was wounded, captured, and escaped, and took part in the liberation of the town.

Monument Text:

John Shirley, ne le 08.12.1924, sergent du 15eme Régiment d’Infanterie, 3eme Division de l’Armée Américain.  Combattant de la libération de Benwihr, blesse, fait prisonnier et évadé, le 23 décembre 1944.  Place inaugurée en sa présence le 14 mai 2005. 

 

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:  John Shirley, born on 12 August 1924, Sergeant in the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, US Army.  Combatant in the liberation of Behwihr, wounded, captured and escaped, the 23 December 1944.  The square inaugurated in his presence on 14 May 2005.
