Audie Murphy Monument - Holtzwihr

On the east side of the forest road, several hundred meters north of the soccer field.  Monument


A stone wall with a metal silouette of a tank destroyer, a name plate, and a metal plaque with French text explaining the story of Audie Murphy's exploits here.  The monument was constructed in January 2000 by Patrick Baumann and JL Fleith.

Ce mémorial est dédié

Aux soldats de la 3eme DI US et du CC4

Sous commandement de la 1ere Armée Française

Qui ont libéré Holtzwihr le 27 janvier 1945

Apres des sanglants combats

Dans les conditions très pénibles

 

Ils représente l’action héroïque que fit,

A cet endroit le Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy

Du 15eme RI US le 26 janvier 1945.

Pour repousser une contre-attaque ennemie

Pour cette action, il fut décoré

Des plus hautes distinctions Américain et Françaises. 

 

Passant, respect ce mémorial

Et n’oublie pas que ses soldats sont morts

Pour que tu vives libre

ENGLISH TRANSLATION :

In Memory

This memorial is dedicated to the soldiers of the 3rd US Infantry division and the CC4 under the command of the First French Army who liberated Holzwihr on 27 January 1945 after bloody combat in awful conditions. 

They represent the heroic actions that were performed here by Lt Audie Murphy of the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division on 26 Jan 45. For repelling an enemy counterattack, for this action he was decorated with the highest American and French awards. In passing, respect this memorial and do not forget that the soldiers died so that you can live free. Holtzwihr, 29 Jan 2000.
