73rd Bomber Wing Monument

Details:

The monument is located on the right end of the concrete base. 
Monument The monument is a 1.5 meter high, pentagonal, white concrete monument. On the front, there is a small metal plaque and a larger bronze plaque beneath it. The bronze plaque contains text as well as the insignia for the 20th Air Force. 

This monument commemorates members of the 73rd Bomber Wing, who were stationed on the island of Saipan near this location from 1944-1945. In particular, this monument honors the 1033 members of the 73rd Bomber Wing who died during World War II.

THIS MEMORIAL HONORS THE MEN WHO SERVED IN THE
73RD BOMBARDMENT WING 
ON SAIPAN 1944-1945

TENTS AND QUONSET HUTS SHELTERING THE
WING'S 15,000 MEN WERE LOCATED HERE AND
TO THE EAST ALONG THIS OBYAN COAST.

FLYING B-29 SUPERFORTRESSES FROM ISLEY FIELD ON SAIPAN,
THE WING MADE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE USE OF STRATEGIC AIRPOWER.
ALONG WITH OTHER UNITS OF THE U.S. 20TH AIR FORCE IN THE
MARIANAS, THE 73RD SIGNIFICIANTLY INFLUENCED THE OUTCOME OF WORLD WAR II IN THE PACIFIC AREA.

1033 MEN OF THE 73RD WING MADE THE
SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR THEIR COUNTRY.
