New Caledonia Freedom Memorial
Details:
The memorial sits in a large cleared section of the park, facing the harbor. It is clearly visible from all sides of the park itself. Monument The large half-sphere memorial was inaugurated on 13 August 1992 in honor of American forces stationed at New Caledonia during the Pacific War (Pacific Theatre of WWII). It is in the form of a globe and is surrounded by panels around its northern arc which are painted in vibrant red, white, and blue, giving the appearance of an American flag. A bronze plaque sits at the southern base of the structure and features the insignia of US military branches as well as embossed text in French and English. The memorial is surrounded by a low rope chain fence and is accessible by a small staircase which leads up to it. Two flag poles sit on each side of the memorial at its south end.
